Anti VEGF Treatment
Usually AMD are other disease affecting retina is treated with a drug known as anti-VEGF. About one third of people get improved vision after undergoing anti -VEGF treatment. It is useful in stabilizing vision in most of the people. VEGF is nothing but vascular endothelial growth factor. It is a protein produced by our body cells and also produces new blood vessels. Sometimes too much of VEGF is produced by our body cells. This causes abnormal blood vessels to grow in our eyes. It further damages our eyes, causing blindness or low vision.
This medicine blocks VEGF production and slows down the growth of blood vessels in eyes. As a result its top damage caused by blood vessels which are abnormal and improves vision.
They are used to treat conditions like macular edema, retinal vein occlusion, diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration. There are three types of anti vegf medicines - Avastin, lucentis and eylea. All the three mentioned above of safe and effective and the only difference is cost and packaging.
Anti VEGF Treatment Procedure
First the ophthalmologist cleans the patient's eye to prevent any infection. The eye is then numbed and speculum is used to keep eyelids away. The drug is then injected in the eyeball.
