Astigmatism - Causes And Types

When the curvature of our eyes lens or cornea is imperfect, the condition is known as astigmatism. Usually the lens and cornea is equally curved in all directions and is very smooth. As it is equally curved, light rays fall sharply on retina present at the back of the eye. If the lens or cornea is not equally curved or smooth, light rays do not fall properly. This is known as refractive error.

Types of Astigmatism

There are two types of astigmatism. They are corneal astigmatism and lenticular astigmatism. Corneal astigmatism is a condition in which the cornea's shape is irregular. Lenticular astigmatism is a condition in which the lens shape is distorted. In both the conditions near and far vision is distorted.

Some of the other refractive errors along with astigmatism is myopia or hyperopia. Myopia is nearsightedness and hyperopia is farsightedness. Children with astigmatism are unaware about this condition at first and they complain about blurry vision. This severely impacts a child's ability to shine and so it is necessary to get their eyes checked at regular periods.

Irregular curvature in eyes lens are cornea is the cause for astigmatism. It is a very common condition and from person to person the corneal shape differs. This condition is also inherited. Sometimes it can also develop after an eye surgery, injury or disease. Some of the symptoms of astigmatism are eye strain, headache, eye discomfort, blurry vision etc. if you have any of these conditions consult your doctor and have a complete eye checkup.
