Bacterial Keratitis - Symptoms, Causes And Treatment
Cornea is a clear, dome shaped front portion of the eye. Bacterial Keratitis is an infection which affects the cornea. Usually it develops quickly and when left untreated it causes complete blindness. It is not caused by a single type of bacteria but many. The two most common type of bacteria which are responsible for this infection are Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and Staphylococcus Aureus.
Bacterial Keratitis Symptoms:
Eye redness, reduced vision, excessive tearing, eye pain, light sensitivity and discharge from eyes. Consult your doctor if you have any of these symptoms. If it is left untreated it can cause complete blindness and treatment is very important to prevent vision loss.
Bacterial Keratitis Causes
The two main causes of this disease are eye injury and extended lens usage. If proper care is not maintained while using lenses, the lens may contaminate finally leading to bacterial keratitis. Always wash your hands before using contact lenses. You must remove your contact lenses before bathing and do not store your contact lenses in water. Do not use eye drops or saline solution to disinfect the lenses. Follow the contact lens maintenance procedure as prescribed. Always use fresh solution to rinse the contact lenses. Keep the contact lenses in a clean case to protect it from contamination and infection. Do not use damaged contact lenses. Do not try to overuse the contact lenses and use it as prescribed. Never wear a lens which is stored more than 30 days.
Bacterial Keratitis Treatment
The eye is scraped gently and a small sample is taken by the ophthalmologist and tested for infection. Usually it is treated using antibiotic eye drops and steroid drops. If it is treated early and before the centre of the cornea gets affected, vision is prevented. If the infection is too severe, corneal transplant is done to restore vision.
