Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion And Its Symptoms

We all know that arteries and veins present in our body are responsible for transporting blood from one part to another. There is one main artery and one main vein present on our eyes retina. When the vein is blocked, the condition is known as branch retinal vein occlusion.

The blocked the vein can cause many problems in the eyes. Fluid as well as blood can spill into the retina damaging the macula. In turn, the central vision also gets affected. As there is no blood circulation without the vein transporting blood, nerve cells die and we lose vision permanently.

Symptoms:

Vision loss and blurry vision in both or one of the eyes is the most common symptom. This can happen suddenly or advances over time. Some people may also notice floaters, lines or dark spots in their vision. It is nothing but blood leaking from retinal vessels into the vitreous. This condition mostly happens in only one eye.

People who are above 50 are susceptible to this condition. People who have diabetes, glaucoma, high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis have a greater risk of this disease.

One must do exercise regularly, maintain weight according to body mass index, eat diet containing low fat and should not smoke or drink to keep this disease at bay.

Diagnosis:

The pupils are widened with eye drops and the retina is checked. Fluorescein angiography test is done by the ophthalmologist. When the test is conducted, yellow dye is injected in arm's vein. The retina is photographed using a special camera and the blocks are identified.

Treatment:

However this condition cannot be cured, the vision can be stabilized. If there are any leaking blood vessels, it is sealed to prevent further swelling of the macula in the retina. Focal laser treatment is also done to stop the fluid from leakage. Anti VEGF treatment is also done to improve the vision. The treatment has to be continued for two years for best results. After the treatment is complete it takes some months to notice vision improvement.

Consult your doctor to know more of this disease and about the treatment procedure.
