Diabetic Retinopathy Diagnosis:
The pupils are dilated at first using dilating eye drops and a special lens is used to examine the eyes by ophthalmologist. Fluorescein Angiography is done to inspect the retina. Fluorescein or yellow dye is injected in veins present in our arms. Through this procedure, the blocked or leaking blood vessels are found out as the dye travels through the blood vessels.
Optical Coherence tomography is also done to inspect the retina. Through this procedure the macular swelling is measured and retinal thickness is noted.
Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment:
One must always follow the diet recommended by nutritionist and if the blood pressure and sugar gets controlled, the vision loss is also controlled and the eyes are maintained healthy.
Anti VEGF is also another procedure and it includes drugs like Eylea, Lucentis and Avastin which helps to reduce macular swelling. The vision loss is slowed down and the vision is improved. Steroid drugs are also another option.
If the condition is severe, Laser surgery is done to seal leaking blood vessels and to reduce retinal swelling. This is also done to shrink blood vessels, stopping them from growing again.
Sometimes virectomy is also done and the vitreous gel is removed from eyes, making way for light to fall properly on the retina. This procedure also removes the retinal scar tissue.
