Diagnosis And Treatment For Astigmatism
Comprehensive eye exam is a must for diagnosing astigmatism. First the doctor tests the patient’s visual acuity and asks to read letters on a chart. This helps him to determine vision clarity at certain distance.
Phoropter if used to determine how a lens is to be shaped for vision correction. He puts a series of lines before our eyes and asks which lens is giving a better vision. Thus the lens which is helpful to provide clear vision is determined. Sometimes auto refractor is used to determine the correct lens. A ray of light is passed on to our eyes and the exact measurement is taken. Keratometer is used to measure corneal curve. Corneal topography provides information about corneal shape.
Astigmatism Treatment
Eyeglasses and contact lenses are used to correct astigmatism. Initially rigid contacts are used for correcting astigmatism but now toric contact lenses also used to correct astigmatism. However these lenses are not appropriate for all persons. Consult your doctor to know which one is the best for you. LASIK surgery is also another option to correct astigmatism.
Astigmatism Measurement
Astigmatism is measured in a value known as diopter. Perfect eye has zero diopter. Most of the people have 0.5-0.75 diopter. People having more diopter than that need contact lenses or eyeglasses to correct their vision. When it comes to measurements spherical indicates farsightedness or nearsightedness. Minus sign indicates nearsightedness and plus sign indicates farsightedness. Cylinder measures astigmatism degree whether the cornea is irregular or flat. Axis is measured from 0 to 180 degrees. It helps to find out where the astigmatism is located on the cornea.
