Diagnosis and Treatment for Corneal Ulcer

A special dye known as fluorescein is used to inspect cornea for any damage with the help of slit lamp microscope. It is also used to find out a corneal ulcer. If the ophthalmology suspects that the corneal ulcer is caused because of an infection, first the cause of infection is found out and treated first.

Corneal ulcer treatment:

Antifungal, antibiotic and antiviral eye drops are used to treat this condition. Antifungal tablets are also prescribed by the ophthalmologists sometimes and in some cases injection or medication is also used. Anti inflammatory eye drops or steroid is used after the infection is gone, as it reduces swelling and prevents scarring. Use steroid eye drops only when it is prescribed by a surgeon as it may worsen the condition sometimes.

Pain medication is also prescribed during the healing process to get relief from pain.

Surgical treatment:

Corneal transplant is done to replace the damaged cornea using a healthy cornea. Sometimes a scar can remain after the infection and ulcer is gone. A transplant is a good option to improve vision in this case. If the corneal ulcer is not possible to be treated with any medication, the best way is to go for corneal transplant surgery.
