​Drusen Diagnosis and Treatment

Usually it occurs with ageing and is found in people more than sixty years of age. Caucasians are more prone to having this disease as well as people having AMD. Some of the other risk factors are smoking, abnormal level of cholesterol and family history of this disease.

Drusen Diagnosis:

Dilated eye exam is one of the ways to diagnose this disease and the pupils are dilated using eyedrops and the eyes are examined with the help of an ophthalmoscope. Ophthalmoscope is a device used for examining retina and the back portion of the eyes.

If soft drusen is detected, Amsler grid is used to check symptoms for macular degeneration such as dark areas in vision, wavy or blurry vison etc. it he ophthalmologist suspects that the patient is having optic nerve drusen, some other tests are done additionally to confirm the condition.

Drusen Treatment:

The treatment is not needed for hard drusen. It is found out using an eye examine regularly and are closely monitored to see whether they are developing into soft one or not. Soft drusen is a sign of AMD and so it is important to check it. If the presence is confirmed, the medication for AMD is provided. Eliminating soft drusen may not improve the AMD condition.

If optic nerve drusen is found out, it is closely monitored as there is no treatment for this condition. If there is development of choroidal neovascular membrane, treatment is needed.
