Dry Eyes and its Relationship with Vitamin A
There are many people across the globe with Vitamin A deficiency. Many people in developing countries do not get enough Vitamin A. Those at high risk category include infants, children and pregnant women. There are two types of Vitamin A found in foods:
- Preformed Vitamin A
- Provitamin A (1)
Preformed Vitamin A is mostly found in eggs, fish, meat, dairy products. It is also known as Retinol. Provitamin A, on the other hand are red, green, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables. The cartenoids present in this is converted by the body to provitamin A.
Vitamin A is fat-soluble, that is important for good vision, a strong immune system, good skin health and reproduction. Vitamin A deficiency is one of the reasons for dry eyes. Long term deficiency of Vitamin A not only causes dry eyes but can also lead to complete blindness.
Tear film, a clear lubrication, protects our eyes. Because of this deficiency, the eyes lack proper lubrication and it may lead to dry eyes. Its causes irritation, redness and blurry eyes.
In the case of Chronic Dry Eye Syndrome, punctual plug is highly beneficial.
