Why we have different eye colors
Melanin, a pigment present in the Iris determines eye color. The more melanin is present, the darker the eye. Our eye does not have green or blue pigments. Light scattering in the stroma results in lighter eye color and is called Rayleigh scattering. We can see that in many European babies have blue eyes during birth, then it changes to Brown as melanin production has not started during birth.
Prediction of eye color
It is not possible to predict exactly how a child's eye color will be. If both the parents have blue eyes it is not sure that the child may have blue eyes. This is because of the influence of genes. The most important genes in human body is OC A2 and HERC2. Studies reveal that 16 genes influence our eye color. The two different versions of these jeans are called alleles, the expressed one is dominant while the unexpressed one is recessive. Blue eye color is a result of four blue alleles if both the parents have brown eyes and are carriers of a blue gene. Then we can predict that the child will most likely have brown eye and have one by four percent chance of having blue eyes.
Unusual eye colors
We can see that some have violet or pink eyes or blue eyes on one side and brown eye on the other. This is due to albinism as the body is unable to produce required melanin. Heterochromia is condition in which the same person has different eye colors. This is also because of genetics. It is impossible to change our eye color but we can temporally change our eye color using colored contact lenses. Consult your doctor before trying these type of lenses.
