Blood pressure is nothing but amount of blood a heart pumps and the degree to blood flow resistance in blood vessels. If there is high flow resistance and more blood flow, then the blood pressure rises. Efficient functioning of the heart is necessary to pump out blood to the body.
Hypertension or high blood pressure is very dangerous as it places stress on heart and can lead to stroke or heart attack and other health problems also. The exact cause of high blood pressure is unknown but there are some risk factors like smoking, alcohol consumption, excessive use of salt in diet, overweight, stress, no physical exercise and family history of blood pressure. The eyes also get affected by high blood pressure and can lead to conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. If the retinal veins and arteries are blocked it can cause vision loss permanently.
Glaucoma damages the optic nerve present in eyes and it happens when fluid gets accumulated in the front portion of eye. When there is increased pressure because of the extra fluid, the optic nerve gets damaged. It is one of the leading causes of blindness in older people. There are two types of glaucoma. They are primary open angle glaucoma and closed angle glaucoma.
Diabetic retinopathy attacks people who have diabetes. The retinal blood vessels get damaged because of high blood sugar level.
When the macula which is present in the retina is damaged the condition is called macular degeneration.
