Know About Corneal Hydrops

Corneal hydrops is also known as corneal rupture. It is a rare condition caused by severe keratoconus. The term ‘hydrops’ is used to denote fluid accumulation in any part of the body. In this condition, there is a sudden onset of tear fro corneal membranes which allows fluid from inside of the eyes to leak into the corneal tissues.

The cornea is actually composed of layers. The central layer is thick and is surrounded by thinner layers on both the sides. The membrane present on the inner side is known as Descemet’s membrane and is elastic and strong. This membrane acts as a barrier to stop the inside eye fluids leaking into the cornea.

When a person is suffering from corneal hydrops, this membrane ruptures and it allows fluids to enter into cornea. Because of this the corneal transparency gets altered and the affected area appears milky. There is also deterioration in vision and also pain. Sometimes there is also scratchy sensation in eyes. The best way to get relief from this condition is to go to an ophthalmologist and get your eyes carefully examined. Eye drops are prescribed to relieve the discomfort.

This condition can be diagnosed only by an experienced ophthalmologist. It is a rare condition and so if you feel that your vision is getting poor day by day and the eyes have become red and painful, consult our doctor immediately. Sometimes this condition may also occur because of contact lenses and is just a corneal infection.

This condition is not permanent and disappears over a couple of months. Anti inflammatory eye drop are prescribed to relieve pain and make the cornea clear as soon as possible. Corneal transplant is not needed in this condition. There is appearance of a scar on the original membrane tear and it will not affect the vision of the eyes. However if the scar is central and is impacting vision, a corneal transplant is mandatory.
