They are also known as lubricating eye drops. The burning, irritating and scratchy feeling that appears in our eyes is very uncomfortable. Eye strain is caused by variety of things such as long term mobile use, computer usage, wind, smoke and certain medical conditions. Lubricating eye drops moisture to our eyes and relieves discomfort.

They provide relief for temporary causes when we are tired or when we are in a dry climate. This along with our tear film helps to keep our eyes moisturized and protects the surface of our eyes. This is available in all drug stores without a prescription and in different brands.

If the dry eyes condition is very serious, then one must use lubricating gel ointment. When compared to regular drops they stay longer in our eyes. The vision gets blurred for a temporary period of time and so it is preferable to use them during bedtime.

They are safe and do not contain any preservatives. Even if they contain any preservative it is designed to keep bacteria away when the bottle is opened. Preservatives irritate severe dry eyes do not recommend eye drop containing preservatives more than 3 times a day. Preservative free eye drops can be used more than 4 times a day.

Side Effects

Using artificial tears can induce side effects such as allergy, blurry vision, itchiness, swelling, sick feeling and breathing problem. Consult your doctor if you have any of these symptoms.
