Orthokeratology Lenses
It is also known as ortho-k which is done to temporarily reshape the cornea. The cornea is reshaped for a clear and improved vision. These specially designed lenses are usually worn at night and while sleeping, it reshapes the front part of our eyes. If the lenses are not used as prescribed, the vision improvement may get reversed.
This is used to correct myopia or near-sightedness. It can also be corrected by wearing lenses, glasses PRK or LASIK. Ortho-k is one of the best non surgical ways for a good vision, without the need for glasses. During childhood, the vision continues to change and so ortho-k is recommended. It is to be noted that LASIK is not recommended until the vision gets stable. However there is no strong evidence that ortho-k corrects myopia.
Ortho-k working:
The cornea is the most important part of eye as it acts like a protective layer for our eyes. The corneal surface is measured using corneal topographer. According to the measurement, a lens is designed for our eyes. With the help of the light reflected from the surface of the eyes, a corneal map is created and it shows the curvature and shapes in cornea. There is no pain in this procedure.
The corneal centre is flattened so as to bend the light for entering the eyes. The lenses are glass permeable and rigid, strong enough to reshape cornea. It also allows oxygen for breathability.
These lenses must be worn regularly for a good vision otherwise the cornea will get back to its original state.
