Proper Blinking – A Remedy for Dry Eye Syndrome
All living being has the tendency of shedding tears. Tears are of three types namely, reflex tears that clear dust from the eyes; continuous tears that lubricate the eyes and help them protect from infection; emotional tears that flushes out the stress hormones and other toxins hence has more health benefits.
There are different categories of dry eyes, depending upon the component which is affected. For instance, when the meibomian glands fail to secrete sufficient oil, the tear film may evaporate very quickly. This problem is identified as the major cause of dry eye syndrome.
Problem arises when one experiences dry eyes. Dry eye syndrome is a general condition that occurs when tears fail to provide adequate lubrication for the eyes. Tears may be scarce for various reasons like decreased tear production, exposure to air-conditioned room, computer screen, bike-riding, airplane travel, prolonged reading, etc. Dry eyes cause sting or burning sensation.
Tears protect the surface of the eyes from infection. Inadequate tears increases the risk of eye infection. Severe untreated dry eyes may lead to eye inflammation – “Keratitis sicca”, abrasion of the corneal surface that affects both the cornea and the conjunctiva – “Keratoconjunctivitis sicca”, corneal ulcer and vision problems. It also affects regular activities such as reading.
Blinking is an ordinary reflex that protects the eyes from dryness, bright light, and any foreign objects moving towards it. It regulates tears in order to nourish and cleanse the surface of the eye. The blinking rate varies - newborns blink only 2 times per minute while, people at the adolescent stage blink 14 to 17 times per minute which remains constant throughout the rest of their life. It also increases in response to pain, for bright light, changes in temperature and humidity, and during conversation.
