Things To Know After Corneal Transplant
One has to visit the ophthalmologist’s office regularly as per scheduled right after a corneal transplant. The stitches are removed or may not be removed depending on the type of stitching done. Also the health and healing period of the eye is noted before undertaking the procedure.
During the recovery period, there are some things to be done. Always use the eye drops as prescribed by the doctor. Never rub or press your eyes during the healing period. Take pain medications if you need as recommended by the doctor and wear eyeglasses to protect the eyes during healing period. If you have any concern, feel free to contact your ophthalmologist. It can take one year or more, depending upon the type of surgery.
Possible problems associated with corneal transplant:
There are some possible problems associated with corneal transplantation. The major one is organ rejection. This happens when our body’s immune system considers the new transplanted tissue as foreign and rejects it. Nearly 3/10 people suffer from this problem. Some of the warning signs are sensitivity to light, eye pain, redness and hazy vision. Immediately contact your ophthalmologist if you suffer from any of these problems.
Infection, glaucoma, detached retina and bleeding are also some other problems. Problems like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma can affect the vision even if the transplant is successful. Some may need second transplantation if the first one gets rejected. However the rejection rate for second transplant is higher when compared to the first one.
