Treatment For Choroidal Neovascular Membrane

The treatment procedure differs according to the underlying disease for this condition. Thermal laser treatment, anti VEGF drug treatment and photodynamic therapy are some of the solutions to ease this condition.

Thermal laser treatment

This treatment is done in an outpatient procedure in a doctor's office or in a hospital. In this procedure a focused laser beam is used. This beam is of very high energy and it produces a small burn when it touches the retina, especially the treatment area. In the procedure abnormal blood vessels are destroyed and further leakage is prevented. After the treatment is done, the vision may seem a little blurred. But this condition will automatically get stabilized in some days. The treatment usually forms as scar at the treatment site and a permanent blind spot is created and there is a little distraction in the field of vision. A re-treatment is usually prescribed after five years.

Anti VEGF treatment:

This is one of the common ways to treat choroidal neovascular membrane. Anti VEGF drugs targets a chemical known as vascular endothelial growth factor, which is responsible for creating abnormal blood vessels to grow in our retina. Various anti VEGF drugs can do this job of blocking the chemical. The CNVM growth is reduced and the leakage slowed down after the treatment and the vision also gets improved. This drug is given directly into the eye with the help of an injection. Multiple anti VEGF injections are given for effective benefit.

Photodynamic therapy

A photosensitizer and a low power laser is used to target the choroidal neovascular membrane. The photosensitive drug is injected into the arm vein and the abnormal blood vessels are targeted. It is done on an outpatient basis and multiple treatments are done as there are chances of blood vessel reopening.

It is advisable to treat this condition earliest as possible to prevent vision loss and stabilize vision. However, in some patients the last vision cannot be restored. Consult your doctor to know more about this disease.
