Macular degeneration is an eye condition which has affected nearly two million Americans and is also one of the leading causes of blindness. There are two types in this disease. The first one is dry or atrophic and the second one is wet or neovascular. When the patient is suffering from dry macular degeneration, light cells present on the macula slowly break down and it is also one of the common types accounting more that ¾ of the diagnosed cases.
The other type, which is wet macular degeneration is a serious condition and is also more damaging when compared to the dry condition and it accounts to more than 90 percent blindness. There is no known cure for both types of macular degeneration but there are some ways to prevent this disease. Recent study by researchers has shown that beets, green leafy vegetables and vegetable nitrates reduce the risk of early stage macular degeneration.
There are some ways that one can follow to prevent macular degeneration. If a person is smoking, he must stop it immediately as excessive smoking can cause macular degeneration and can lower eyesight. Also take multivitamin and other mineral supplements. One must also exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight to keep macular degeneration at bay. Intake of refined carbohydrates must be reduced. Spinach is another excellent food which provides great source of nitrates and also one must wear sunglasses to block ultra violet radiation and blue eyes from entering the eyes.
