What Causes ​Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) ?

Amblyopia is a condition which occurs in childhood. The vision is not properly developed and it may occur in one or both the eyes. This is known as lazy eye and commonly it affects children and babies. In children vision develops at an early stage it is important to diagnose amblyopia and treat it early as possible.

Causes of amblyopia

Strabismus is one of the conditions for lazy eye. The eyes point in different directions. One eye points or focuses straightly while the other eye focuses at different direction. The brain ignores images that are not focused directly, and it avoids seeing a double. However this is a barrier for proper eye development.

Refractive error such as farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism are also one of the factors. One of these conditions may be present in one eye of the child. There is no proper development of vision in the eye. At birth some children have cataract in their eyes, causing hindrance to proper development of eyes.
